The Role

Our client is a highly regarded and successful family owned SME seeks to appoint an Operations / Commercial Director to join the Management team. The company has plans for continued business growth and this role is crucial in terms of ensuring the operations of the business are run efficiently, safely, and meet key KPI’s.
The role will also require commercial skills in terms of pricing strategies, cost management, and P&L accountability. The successful candidate will be required to contribute to the ongoing profitability, growth, and commercial success of the business.
Reporting into this role are the Operational Managers, Production, Site/Health and Safety/Warehouse, Quality Assurance, and Distribution. A high level of communication is also required with The Administration Manager. It is envisaged that the successful candidate will be able to delegate daily operational activities to the Management team while fulfilling a more strategic, commercial, and business development role themselves focusing and setting overall objectives and working with the Management team to achieve these.
The Operations / Commercial Director will need to maintain a consistent growth trajectory addressing all the commercial threats and opportunities whilst communicating effectively to all the department teams. Have a focus on the requirements of the customers and manage successfully sustainable growth. The Director will be responsible for the purchasing of raw material but will not be directly involved in the sales and marketing. They will also be adept at business planning, business development, be commercially astute with a strategic mindset. Needless to say the Director will have outstanding interpersonal communication skills.
The combined role of Operations / Commercial Director represents a broad range of responsibilities within this SME, however the role excludes direct responsibility for Sales and Marketing Management except where commercial input is required for pricing and cost strategies, and monitoring margin expectations.
The Successful applicant will work as a team with other Directors, who report to the Company Chairman.

Responsibilities
Agree and execute commercial Business plans with other Directors
Agree and manage commercial Budgets and other commercial activities
Commercial cost management
Pricing and Margin control
Overall responsibility for all site activities including Production, Distribution, Warehouse, and Quality Control, CAPEX and Engineering projects. Ensuring these are carried out to fully meet the companies own standards and all legislative requirements
Provide Health & Safety leadership
Responsibility for implementation of an agreed Raw Material Purchasing and Risk strategy, and be well briefed in Raw Material Markets, purchasing management will also be required for other expenditure such as energy, motor fleet, and capital expenditure
Manage relationships with Key Raw Material Suppliers
Manage KPI’s critical to business success
Develop and implement industry best practice in terms of managing manufacturing efficiency, and further develop a culture of continual improvement
To work to achieve all customer requirements and travel to clients and suppliers in both UK and occasionally Abroad
Maintain a high level of communication with other Directors and Departmental Managers

The Person
At present there is the opportunity to work alongside the present incumbent so this role could suit an ambitious younger candidate seeking career progression or a suitably experienced candidate
Degree level education, ideally candidates would have an MBA, and some experience with Health and Safety such as NEBOSH or IOSH qualification and HRM qualifications, and experience with efficiency management systems for example 6 Sigma would be advantageous
Experience of People Management, and an ability to act as coach and leader of the Operations team. A relationship builder able to increase continue to increase co-operation across departments. Comfortable in the Board room and the shop floor
A proven ability to work with key clients, suppliers, peers, and employees
An understanding of Formal Quality assurance schemes, ideally the UFAS, BETA NOPS and FEMAS schemes, or other schemes such as ISO or BRC standards
Ideally the successful applicant will have some knowledge and interest in the Equestrian Sector and land based industry
P&L and cost management experience is desirable
Flexible attitude on a day to day basis, a good listener but with the gravitas to lead the team and be firm when required
Ability to balance and meet the needs of all business stakeholders, Our Customers, Employees, Suppliers, Shareholders, and regulatory bodies
