Our client has an outstanding International reputation within the Fresh Produce Industry. As part of a major group they have developed a hugely successful business in prepared Fruit and Salads for UK Retailers.

This is a rare opportunity to join a fast paced and exciting company in a vital role as Procurement Manager.

Job Objectives and Responsibilities

To effectively manage all fruit procurement activities for allocated products in line with commercial expectations.

This will include, but is not limited to, liaising with suppliers to negotiate and obtain best agreement, prices and services for the business; ensuring margin maximisation; formulating and delivering a cost effective supply chain strategy and effective relationship management with internal and external stakeholders.

The role also has a wider remit to manage and oversee all activities relating to incoming fruit, in terms of cost, quality and ensuring fruit is fully compliant before arrival to PW.

Main Duties

  • To have overall responsibility for procurement of allocated fruit categories, ensuring adequate level of fruit stock is maintained.
  • To collaborate with finance team in managing and tracking cost of fruit vs budget, ensuring that the Procurement team is aware of variance and proactively seeking solutions to beat budget costs.
  • To have sole Procurement responsibility for allocated products.
  • To develop strong working relationships with our client’s worldwide grower base, working with them and relevant third parties to improve the service and product they supply to the company, visiting growers when required and liaising with them in relation to current market conditions and any other topics which may impact efficient supply of fruit.
  • Ensure the successful management of projects under your responsibility on time, and to agreed costs and specifications.
  • Support the successful design and implementation of business wide or cross functional projects.
  • Actively seek new opportunities of supply to improve availability, quality and/or commercials; undertaking tendering process, where appropriate, to select suppliers in line with strategic objectives.
  • Ensure all communication between our client and suppliers for allocated products is clearly and accurately documented and recorded, as per business requirements. ·
  • Run the tendering process in a timely manner (typically 10 weeks ahead of commencing supply) for all allocated products ensuring all fruit is compliant with all of the company requirements.
  • Work closely with Procurement Administration team to ensure all invoices, claims and orders for allocated products are processed in a timely manner in line with business requirements.
  • Support the Head of Procurement with developing a strategy for product procurement in line with business objectives and leadership approval, supporting the planning process in the creation and development of short- and long-term supplier plans, NPD and customer range planning.
  • Manage the supplier base across season to ensure adherence to quality, commercial and compliance standards, holding regular grower meetings during season where required and managing all pre and end of season meetings and reviews across the supplier base for your allocated products.
  • Manage and develop strong working relationship with both factory production and technical teams, working collaboratively to ensure that the product being sourced is the best possible in line with the requirements of the production site and end customer.
  • Supporting our client across all areas of the business that improves Procurement, specifically working with the production teams to impart knowledge, develop staff skills and manage waste within the business.
  • Collaborate with wider business to manage, communicate and ensure delivery of the procurement function and accurate input, maintenance and communication of reported data, analysis and translation.
  • Produce ad hoc reports as and when required, providing analysis and interpretation of relevant Procurement data, including product specific information, in line with business strategies, plans and requirements.
  • Develop and maintain product strategy packs and quality improvement plans.
  • Lead by example and strategize ways to promote and implement business vision and values within the Procurement team.
  • Deputise for the Head of Procurement as required.

As Procurement Manager, first-rate stakeholder management is a fundamental to success of all projects/ workstreams.

Accountabilities 

  • Strategy and planning – Support the Head of Procurement in developing and implementing short-and long-term plan to ensure fruit availability at all times and that stock is suitably stored, in compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations, quality standards and customer specifications.
  • Compliance – Ensure your compliance with Procurement Code of Conduct at all times.
  • Cost Management – Responsible for effective management of cost by ensuring allocated fruit is procured within allocated budget and proactively looking for any opportunities to reduce cost across the business.
  • Project management – Responsibility for planning, developing, implementing and reviewing allocated projects in line with business requirements
  • Stakeholder Management – Develop, nurture and maintain good relationship with internal and external stakeholders, including suppliers, growers and other relevant third parties.

Person Specification and Skill Requirements

  • Understands the retail environment and demonstrates a knowledge of supply chain process.
  • Able to influence and build effective working relationships with all internal and external stakeholders.
  • Confident and resilient communicator with good negotiation skills.
  • Computer literate – at ease with IT software including all packages of Microsoft Office. Excel skill essential.
  • Navision experience desirable.
  • Independent with a self-organised approach and the ability to plan a workload and support other members of the team.
  • Good time management is essential.
  • Commercial and financial acumen.
  • Attentive to detail and administratively self-sufficient.

Qualifications and Experience:

Specific Knowledge & Experience

  • Fresh Produce / Fruit Procurement Experience
  • Experience working with a UK retailer and understands the needs and major requirements of the UK Supermarkets
  • Ideally Procurement / Sourcing experience for a major retail (advantageous)
  • Minimum of 5 years’ working in a similar role highly desirable.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ knowledge of fruit or fresh produce industry highly desirable.

Specific Skills

  • Full driving license.
  • Fluent in both spoken and written English.
  • The ability to speak other European languages fluently, especially Spanish is desirable.

Monday – Friday, 08:00 – 17:00 (1 hour unpaid break) – 40 hrs p/w

Hybrid working – work from home, as and when pre-agreed with Head of Department.
