Our client is bringing all the HR functions under one individual / office , this is a new appointment. The company is a well-known farming operation, head office is based in North Suffolk and employs 60 full-time staff which would increase during the busy season to over 140 employees. The expectation is that the successful candidate will have a good knowledge of running their own HR office and conversant with all the technical and legal aspects of the role. In addition the candidate will be responsible for appraisals, staff development, performance, goal setting,training, grievance procedures etc.

Technical Manager

Technical Manager

Technical Manager required to join a successful fresh produce business (Importing, growing and Marketing) based in Somerset and local Farms.

Working closely with some of the major retailers, local growers and overseas suppliers you will be responsible for ensuring that the business is compliant with the customer’s technical requirements, attending consistency panels, investigating and responding back to customer complaints and to keep abreast of all new retailer  / customer requirements.

Main Responsibilities

To control the processes that ensures all of the technical requirements of the company are achieved and fully compliant. All activities to be in accordance with the stated Company protocols of Food Safety, GMP and HACCP. In the absence of the post holder, all responsibilities for technical issues, Food Safety, Legality and Quality will be taken up by the Technical Director who will be your Line Manager.

Main Duties:

  • To ensure that the BRC Manual is complete and fully updated.
  • To lead the HACCP team and ensure compliance
  • To conduct any audits as required including any un-announced customer audits.
  • To conduct weekly GMP audits and report
  • To ensure strict compliance with the company’s food safety and quality operating procedures (QOP) are adhered to.
  • To ensure all regular meetings are minuted and attend where appropriate
  • To check all quality systems and conduct tests as per QMS v7.
  • Check Shelf life tests, analyse and report to head office
  • Receive quality reports and analyse for trending.
  • Grower / Supplier sign off, Due Diligence
  • Receive complaints/rejections and conduct thorough review and report.
  • Trend results
  • Manage pest contracts, and act according to situation
  • Conduct regular inspections to the packhouse exterior/interior and advise to the appropriate Manager.
  • To motivate all staff to comply by all protocols and procedures as described in the Manual.
  • To ensure all equipment operators are using equipment in accordance with instruction.
  • To complete any other duties as may be required in line with the position of Technical Manager, or as directed by the management and leadership team.

QA Inspector

A leading Fresh Produce group are looking to expand their Quality team with a Quality Inspector. They are a well known and successful Fresh Produce company, therefore this is a fantastic opportunity for a experienced Quality Assurance / Quality Control professional.

Job purpose:

The QA Inspector role is responsible for ensuring that product is of sufficient quality throughout the process within the company – from ‘raw product’ at goods inward, in stores, in production and then at point of despatch, making accurate assessments of product and decisions on whether it is necessary to re-sort the product, reject or ripen where appropriate . Communicating quality issues to line management and ensuring that the produce sent to our customer complies with the required specification.

Participates in activities to support the achievement of the Company’s strategic enablers – particularly RTM and Procurement Excellence.

Key accountabilities and decision ownership:

  • Receiving, reviewing against specifications, recording details and taking samples of all incoming /packed / outgoing produce. Checking and recording transport conditions and reporting any unsatisfactory conditions for potential claims
  • Assessing the weights, colours and defects of produce to ensure that produce is within the customer specification.
  • Recording results on sheets, computer and /or scanner.
  • Assessing problems which will require further attention or inspection and deciding whether or not the problem requires the fruit to be sorted through the packhouse, completing reports accurately and communicating to relevant business units. Also knows when to refer any major quality issues that require a more experienced view due to the cost of re-sorting or rejected product.
  • Carrying out extra checks and destructive testing of product throughout the QA process to ensure product meets customer specification
  • Setting maintaining and reporting on standards of quality of produce against a defined schedule within production to ensure that the fruit is packed within supermarket specifications.
  • Report packing and quality issues to Team Leaders, Product Controllers and line management to coach production employees on the correct procedure/requirements.
  • Monitoring quality of product at all stages of operations, monitoring reject rates and communicate quality issues to Product Controllers and relevant Production/Commercial teams
  • Ensuring that all technical equipment is checked and re-calibrated (where necessary) on a daily or weekly basis or withdrawing probes / technical equipment which are too far out of specification, completing all necessary paperwork to comply with customer and BRC requirements
  • Collecting and or checking details of any/all label information to ensure compliance using the quick spec system
  • Actively promoting/sharing knowledge and skills with new and existing team members, both formally (training) and informally, to ensure QA team can operate effectively and retain consistency of quality for the customer.

Skills, know-how and experience:
Must have:
• Ability to work in a fast moving and flexible environment
• Product knowledge, confidence and assertiveness required to be fully effective, typically gained within 6 months
• Requirement to understand the source and recognise the symptoms of various defects which affect the quality of the product although there is a manual or management to refer to in the case of difficulties
• Ability to make the right decision on what should happen to product at any stage of the process
• Good IT skills (Excel/Word) to Intermediate level
• Good communicator – able to provide solutions and influence

Our client is a Fresh Produce business based in the UK with a EU customer footprint. They are a well respected grower in South America , principally Grapes, Stone Fruit, Berries and Top Fruit. Their Sales and Marketing arm is heavily involved in UK and EU Retailers, both on a ‘direct’ and management import basis.

Through expansion and development, they are now looking to appoint a Senior Commercial Manager to look after all UK and EU Retail clients.

They are looking for a ambitious and hardworking Commercial Manager to be based in the UK (Office or Home based) to continue to develop their UK & EU customers.

The key purpose of the Commercial Manager role is to build and implement the commercial and marketing strategy for the companies UK & European expansion. Ideally to be applicable for the role we are keen to see a professional background in the commercial world of fresh produce and even better would be EU language skills.

The role:

  • Strategy development – through market analysis, assisting in developing a commercial and marketing strategy.
  • Delivery of the Commercial plan with the UK MD.
  • Identify key commercial target customers and creating long term profitable commercial relationships with them in combination with the rest of the commercial team.
  • Working closely with the operational team globally to ensure a strong logistics strategy and excellence in logistics execution.
  • Managing the accounts of the different customers, ensuring their needs are met.

The Commercial Manager will be based in the UK with a view to travel over UK and Europe to develop the business.

Product Manager

Our client are looking for a candidate with a background in Quality Assurance and Quality Control with Fresh Produce…. They are looking for a Quality / Product Management to be based in Rotterdam with frequent travel to the UK.

It is likely the person will live in Holland (nr Rotterdam) and will having excellent English language skills.

The role will involve inspecting fruit at the Port of entry, most of the time Rotterdam and in some cases UK ports, at our clients storage, distribution depots and at customer warehouses. The fruit needs to meet customer specifications and the QC manager will decide the outcome and will report to the respective Commercial Managers. This is a responsible and involved role in a relatively small team.

Products involved are predominately Grape, Stone fruit and Top Fruit.

 

Role

  • Intake quality inspection.
  • Completion of quality reports and delivering to the business in a timely manner.
  • Summary reports for the end of the season reviews.
  • Liaison with commercial/logistics team of our client to select pallets appropriate for various customers.
  • An understanding of the customer specification is required.
  • Develop a close working relationship with the coldstore to ensure a smooth running relationship across all levels.
  • Visiting customers / packhouses across Europe to develop relationships and obtain the maximum pack-out of our fruit and understand process improvements.
  • To deliver a valued service to our logistics, growers and customers.

 

We are looking for a candidate with the following experience / skills:-

  • Fresh Produce / Fruit Quality Assurance and Control experience

Location

Salary

This is a new role to join our clients expanding Agronomy team. The position is with a leading Fresh Produce company…. It will be based within their Agronomy team to manage the West Midlands.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

To promote and facilitate agronomic best practice, planning and metrics in order that our clients members may become the most technically competent, profitable and aware in the UK industry, and specifically to:

  • Promote and facilitate the aims of the Advisory Service
  •  Manage Agronomic Services across the region and ensure professional integrity of the regional team and quality of delivered advice. Ensure that where defined by the Agronomy Manger standard operating procedures are implemented and maintained. Support Regional Agronomists in any areas where ‘trouble shooting’ is necessary
  • Demonstrate knowledge and familiarity with all crops produced by the company
  • Provide an effective liaison between Technical, Sales Teams and Growers
  • Undertake regular visits to members’ farms to a schedule agreed with each individual member prior to the commencement of each season. To discuss, plan and facilitate;
  • Crop planning and strategy
  • Performance and production benchmarking
  • Crop production planning
  • Crop husbandry recommendations to achieve ‘Best Practice’
  • Supporting research programmes
  • Assist with delivering training to ‘Trainee Agronomists’ and ‘Agronomists’ through a structured programme as defined by the Agronomy Manager

  • Production of ‘Best Management Practice’ documentation
  • Contribute fortnightly technical notes for inclusion in a regular in house bulletin, covering the most relevant current cultural topics for crops, highlighting particular areas of attention in that relevant period
  • To devise, plan organise and facilitate training events, meetings, farm walks and any other such events held to support and expand members (and their staff’s) knowledge and understanding
  • Support and advise the introduction of beneficial new varieties. Assisting in selecting most suitable varieties for the site, soil and production systems, and to ensure that the best agronomic practices for each of the new varieties are being acted upon and implemented
  • Attend and participate in Benchmarking programmes and demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of financial performance
  • Provide information and crop production related material for circulation to members via the Extranet website.

Job Purpose:-

 To be responsible for growing a high yielding crop that meet the needs of retail supermarket  customer specifications including quality assurance, crop husbandry, achieving production targets  & goals in areas designated by Head of Growing. Managing and Monitoring the cycle  from plant delivery to harvest.

 

Main Responsibilities:-

  • Quality of plants – Ensure that all purchased plants meet our clients quality specification. Report any problems to the Head of Growing immediately.
  • Pre-planting & Planting – Ensure that tunnels and troughs are prepared in accordance with operational procedure as directed by the Head of Growing, including stock control of relevant materials. Oversea the planting operations and quality of all commercial crops
  • Crop Maintenance & Husbandry – Plan and deliver against the annual husbandry tasks and labour requirements.  Implement irrigation, fertigation and plant protection products as required throughout the season and maintain records to enable future analysis and improvements. Ensure that spraying is in compliance with current legislation and agreed guidelines.
  • Yield information  & Crop Calendar – Providing accurate yield information, developing an annual crop calendar, husbandry manpower plan, carry out monthly stock takes of chemical and fertilizers; ensure that field maps are correct and up to date.
  • Crop monitoring – Ensure that crop and environmental systems are accurately controlled and monitored all the times. Arrange leaf, soil and water analysis to the matrix plan. Ensure bio controls are applied in time. Ensure pests and diseases are monitored and appropriate action is taken. Produce a crop prediction report on weekly basis. Ensure that all growing practices and procedures are compliant with Nurtures Choice, Assured Produce and any other auditing bodies.
  • Quality assurance & Communication  – Work closely with Technical Department. Ensure that any potential problems are reported to Head of Growing or in his absence the operations Director.

What we are looking for:-

  • Someone with at least 4-5 years in a similar role
  • Must have ‘hands on’ growing management experience
  • Must have Fresh Produce experience (current)
  • FACTS, BASIS, PRIVA, PA1, 2, 6a and b. preferable.
  • You would be commercial focused and understand how an effective and efficiently run growing operation can contribute to stronger overall business profitability.

The Financial Controller will be expected to do the following:-

Our client is a leading Fresh Produce company( part of a major group) with an International scope, they are keen to speak with a experienced Technical Manager who is willing to travel and split their time abroad between the UK or Europe.

The role will be based in Morocco for the winter season , then the rest of the year it will be in the UK offices, with some travel to Europe.

You will consider all options to raise standards and give a point of difference. You will also need to help the quality team successfully manage day to day product quality and compliance.

Extensive experience of managing BRC, HACCP and PPU’s are a pre-requisite. You would be working alongside the Commercial Team on a day to day basis looking after current customers / Suppliers and assisting in the development of new customers. Taking a leading approach to supplier technical compliance in accordance to customer requirements.

The ideal candidate will be able to represent the organisation overseas, liaising with suppliers, fellow employees and customers.

Excellent inter-personnel, IT and communication skills are essential.

An aptitude for dealing with people of different nationalities and cultures in an assertive, confident and natural manner is also desirable.

Experience in the fresh produce sector is essential – preferably within fruit.

Our Client is a leading Importer and Supplier of Fresh Produce to the major retailers and other outlets in the UK and abroad.  They are looking for a experienced QC Supervisor to join their technical team. We are seeking an individual who has experience within a similar role in Fresh Produce, ideally having worked with Fruit.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To manage on a day to day basis the QC Team including resource allocation and communication with the team ensuring we have proper and adequate shift cover and timely communication.
  • To assist the technical team in implementing and designing the Quality Management System (QMS) ensuring it is efficient, implemented and is effective.
  • To attend and partake planning meetings, where required.
  • To ensure a correct handover between shifts and from one day to the next.
  • To use and develop training tools to ensure the training framework is kept up to date and accurate.
  • To ensure compliance to customer product specifications and service levels.
  • Inspect rejections from customers upon return and to ensure accurate and timely communication to the whole team and external sources as required.
  • To ensure that the Company’s QC procedures and adhered to and updated
  • To be the primary interface for daily quality issues from commercial colleagues and to action their enquiries regarding quality.
  • To oversee quality assurance systems of product packed at third party sites if required.
  • To liaise with Technical Managers and suppliers to help prevent repeat rejection issues.

Reporting to: Head of Technical & Quality

A well known family business who are a hugely successful Fresh Produce packer, grower and exporter established in Morocco are looking to expand their team. They export our products all around the world – but have a particularly strong emphasis on supplying the leading UK retailers.

With such a large and expanding business they are always looking for experienced, talented senior managers to help drive their business forward. Currently they are looking for the new position of Senior Quality Manager

You will have experience of ‘deep water’ citrus container traffic. Typically, source countries to Russia , India, South Africa, China and Europe.

You will understand and where necessary initiate and install best practice and customer protocols e.g. Trade with the Far East.

You will also expect to reinforce and as necessary install sustainable best practice within the Moroccan grower base. Although you are not an Agronomist you will be capable of employing the latest Pre and Post Harvest procedures and process to ensure efficiency and quality targets are met.

 

 

The Job

The role will involve managing the day-to-day food safety and quality of all Fresh Produce produced on 2 sites through the development, implementation and ongoing management of robust, food safety & quality systems.

To control all site quality activities in line with technical, operational, financial and other targets.

To ensure the site meets the legal and regulatory requirements as well as customer and industry standards in Food Safety and Quality Management, and to ensure audit-ready standards every day.

This role will suit someone who has previous Quality Management experience in Fresh Produce (Ideally Citrus), a people person with excellent communication skills, Good Project Management skills and eager to make a change.

 

Key accountabilities

• Resource Management – efficiently manage the Quality Assurance teams at 2 sites

• Quality Management System – ensure systems meet legal, customer and best practice requirements

• Process Control – ensure processes are effective in managing optimal quality outcomes

• Continuous Improvement – pro-actively contribute to improvements

 

Responsibilities in detail

• Ensure that the product quality & safety standards are maintained at all times and that the product meets the customer’s specification and is legally compliant in all aspects

• Be the main point of contact for internal/external quality issues and resolution

• Manage, develop and deliver quality improvement plans

• Ensure that our packhouses are audit ready at all times and the strict GMP standards are maintained throughout the manufacturing site.

• Manage the scheduled auditing of safety, legality and GMP standards of the site

• Manage regular documented checks on all areas and lines of manufacture and packing, including paperwork checks to ensure correct completion.

• Ensure validation and verification of processes occurs according to schedule
• Ensure lines are monitored during production and report any issues in relation to quality or product safety

• Manage sampling, checks, tests, swabbing and other conformance requirements according to required schedules, including logging of samples into laboratory system

• Conduct documented investigations and closure of non-conformances, using Root Cause Analysis

• Ensure the completion of records and logs for all activities according to procedure

• Organise and carry out specified projects

 

Skills

• Must be a good communicator with the ability to interact with other teams/functions

• Able to communicate effectively in either English or French (ideally both)

• Ability to prioritise effectively

• Ability to remain calm and professional in a sometimes pressurised environment

• A passion for product quality

 

The ideal candidate would also have:

• An appreciation of where the quality of citrus is at risk in a supply chain

• An understanding of the influence of agronomy on postharvest quality

• An understanding of the sources of microbiological, pest and disease contamination on citrus and how they can be contained

• The ability to recommend appropriate technologies for extending shelf life and reducing biological degradation of the crop

 

Requirements and Qualifications

• Role holder will have previous knowledge & experience of a Quality Management role in fresh produce

• Working knowledge and familiarity with auditing processes – BRC etc.

• HACCP trained • Basic understanding of Microbiology

• Knowledge of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) and Food Safety compliance

• Computer literate, good oral and written communication skills

• Ideally Agric/Hortic/ food science degree (or equivalent)
